Chapter 18

God, he loved her.

It was late in the morning now. He watched her drowse, pulled close to his chest. Love was a feeling he never saw himself having again after Emma died. Then Alexis appeared, or reappeared, in his life. He felt guilty for being able to love again when Emma had lost her chance at life and everything that went with it. He’d never wanted to talk with Emma about what would happen if either one of them died—he should have. He’d always love her. She would always be with him. But he was sure she wouldn’t want him to wallow alone forever. She wasn’t that kind of person.

He’d been staring off into space, but he looked down to see Alexis was looking up at him.

“Serious thoughts, Kruger?” she asked with a smile.

He felt a grin spread across his face. He kissed her and brushed some hair away from her eyes. “How are you?” He ran one hand lazily up and down her back. He’d checked in with her a couple times as they explored each other, encouraging her to communicate with him. Her feeling safe was still his top priority.

She closed her eyes and sighed. “I’m very good. Probably the best I have been in a long time.” She checked her bedside clock. “Why do I have to get up?”

“You don’t have to,” Luke teased, putting his arms around her.

“I have a painting class at three, so I think I should eat something,” she laughed in response.

“They’ll find someone else. I can bring food right to you in bed,” he grinned.

Alexis pushed away from him with another laugh. “And support me financially?”

“If you want,” he said with a shrug.

She rolled her eyes and got out of bed, pulling her pajamas back on. She reached for him, pulling him from the bed and into another deep kiss.

“I’m getting mixed messages here,” he chuckled.

She put her hand in his, each of them collecting a cup of cold coffee from the dresser. They’d made it to the kitchen when there was a knock on her door.

He raised an eyebrow. “Expecting someone?”

“No, not that I know of.” She wrinkled her brow as she gazed toward the door, where another knock sounded. She padded over, checking the peephole. As she pulled away, the look on her face was strange. He felt the hairs on his arms rise.

When she opened the door, he heard a familiar voice say, “Hi, Alexis. How are you this morning?”

Why was the real estate agent here?

“Hey, Geoff. I’m good. How are you?” There was a definite awkward tone in her voice.

“I’m great, thanks. Some of my coworkers decided last minute to head up to Apple Hill this morning. Since we were just talking about it yesterday, I wanted to see if you’d like to go with me.”

Luke frowned. He had no issue with Alexis having male friends, but it sounded like this guy was asking his girlfriend on a date.

“Sorry, I can’t,” Alexis said. The kindness in her voice sounded forced.
